European figure skating stars arrive to Tallinn
Among
others, the defending champions of men's and women's singles as well as ice
dance will be arriving in Tallinn.
The favourites in men's singles are the French skaters – Adam Siao Him Fa, who
has won the last two European Championships, and Kevin Aymoz, both of whom have
achieved the highest scores this season. We can expect a battle for the medals in Tallinn between
nearly ten athletes, home crowd favourites brothers Mihhail and Aleksandr Selevko among them. The men's singles
competition will start on Thursday, 30 January at 13:00 and the free skate,
which determines the medal winners, will take place on Saturday, 1 February at
18:00.
Niina Petrõkina is entering the women’s singles in the European Championships with the season’s sixth score, 187.57 points. This season’s highest scores belongs to Lara Naki Gutmann from Italy (198.49p). The women's singles competition will start on the opening day of the European Championships, Wednesday, 29 January at 17:00. The women's free skate will take place on Friday, 31 January at 18:00.
The main battle for the ice dance title is expected to be between the Italian pair Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri, who have won gold at the two previous European Championships, and the British pair Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, who have won silver in previous years. There are several contenders for the bronze medal. Two years ago, Juulia Turkkila and Matthias Versluis won the ice dance medal for Finland – the country’s first in a couple of decades. A year ago, the Lithuanian pair Allison Reed and Saulius Ambrulevicius won bronze in front of their home crowd in Kaunas. The French pair Evgenia Lopareva and Geoffrey Brissaud, who placed fourth at the last European Championships, have also put in strong performances this season. The ice dance rhythm dance will take place on Friday, 31 January starting at 12:30 and the free dance is scheduled for the following day, Saturday, at 13:00.
In pair skating, the defending champions will be sidelined due to injury. The favourites for the title are Minerva Fabienne Haset and Nikita Volodini from Germany, who won the Grand Prix Final this season. Their main challengers are Anastasia Metelkina and Luka Berulava from Georgia, who are the reigning world junior champions and hold the second-best score among the pairs participating this season. The first European Championships medals will be awarded in the pair skating event when the winners are decided in the evening of 30 January..
